• Kyle Relph • Series: A Summer with C.S. Lewis
What happens to a society that stops believing in objective truth? Drawing on C.S. Lewis's "The Abolition of Man," Pastor Kyle Relph traces how the erosion of moral objectivity shapes individuals, cultures, and the people we're called to become. Sermon Title: The Abolition of Man Speaker: Pastor Kyle Relph Scripture: Daniel 12:9-10, Romans 2:14-15, John 13:34-35, Matthew 5:14-16 Series: A Summer with C.S. Lewis Recorded: June 21, 2026 Church: New Hope Community Church, Clovis, California Lewis wrote "The Abolition of Man" in 1943, but his concern reads like a diagnosis of the present. If there's no objective moral standard, he argued, then morality doesn't disappear. It gets replaced, by whoever holds power. Pastor Kyle walks through Lewis's three-chapter case: that removing objective truth from how we educate and think produces people without moral formation, what Lewis called "men without chests." People who react from impulse rather than reason from virtue. Relph connects that argument to Romans 2, where Paul describes moral law written on every human heart, and to Jesus's command in John 13 to love one another as the clearest visible witness to a watching world. The sermon closes with a practical challenge: be a thermostat, not a thermometer. Set the moral tone in your home, your relationships, your community, rather than simply reflecting the temperature around you.
