• Tim Rolen • Series: A Summer with C.S. Lewis
What's the difference between grief and mourning, and why does it matter for how we heal? Drawing from C.S. Lewis's raw and honest "A Grief Observed" and key passages from Ephesians, 1 Thessalonians, and the Psalms, this sermon walks through what it looks like to bring sorrow before God rather than be ruled by it. Sermon Title: A Grief Observed Speaker: Pastor Tim Rolen Scripture: Ephesians 2:4-9 Series: A Summer with C.S. Lewis Recorded: June 2025 Church: New Hope Community Church, Clovis, California C.S. Lewis didn't write "A Grief Observed" as a theology text. He wrote it in raw grief notebooks after the death of his wife Joy, and the honesty in those pages has helped countless people name what they couldn't otherwise say. This sermon takes that same honesty as its starting point. Pastor Tim Rolen draws a distinction that most people have never been taught: grief is the pain of loss, but mourning is grief brought to God in surrender. Both involve real sorrow. Only one leads somewhere. The sermon moves through Ephesians 2, 1 Thessalonians 4, 2 Corinthians 1, and Psalm 34, tracing the biblical pattern for how loss doesn't have to become identity. Grief is not weakness, and healing is not pretending. But there's a difference between carrying sorrow to God and building a life around it, and Scripture has a great deal to say about which one leads to comfort, restoration, and hope.
