What did Jesus mean when he called himself the light of the world, and what does that promise actually look like in everyday life? This sermon from John 8:12 examines the declaration Jesus made as the Temple torches were burning out, and what it means to follow a light that guides, exposes, and heals. Preached by Pastor Mark Addis. Sermon Title: The Light of the World Speaker: Pastor Mark Addis Scripture: John 8:12 Series: Tell Me Who You Are Recorded: August 16, 2026 Church: New Hope Community Church, Clovis, California Picture the final night of the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. For a week, four towering golden candelabras had blazed so intensely that historical texts record not a single courtyard in all of Jerusalem was left dark. Then the wicks burn out. The smoke clears. The great courtyard begins sliding back into shadow. Right at that moment, Jesus steps into the center of the Court of the Women and declares, "I am the light of the world." This message traces what that claim actually cost, what it genuinely promises, and what it deliberately leaves out. The pillar of fire in the wilderness didn't illuminate all of Egypt. It lit up the next step for the people walking behind it. Pastor Mark explores how that same dynamic plays out in exhausted seasons, hidden habits, and the quiet rooms we keep shut inside us, and why the light that finds us in the dark is the face of a Savior who already knew everything and came anyway.
