• Mark Addis • Series: Tell Me Who You Are
What does it mean that Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd, and why does that title carry more authority than most people realize? In John 10, Pastor Mark Addis traces this ancient royal title from Homer's epics to the cross, and from Psalm 23 to the empty tomb. In the ancient world, "shepherd" wasn't a gentle pastoral image. It was the highest title of royal authority, the word Homer used for King Agamemnon commanding a thousand ships. When Jesus takes that title in John 10 and redefines it around a cross, He doesn't ask for loyalty the way rulers do. He lays His life down. This message traces what the Shepherd Beautiful actually does for His sheep, from the cast sheep who can't right itself to the ironclad double grip of John 10:27-29, where no force in creation can pry open the hand that holds us.
