• Mark Addis • Series: Not So Fast
How do you use your phone less without losing the people who need you? In Matthew 6:22-23, Senior Pastor Mark Addis asks what we look at and when, and offers four practices for reclaiming attention. Sermon Title: Screenless Time Speaker: Senior Pastor Mark Addis Scripture: Matthew 6:22-23; Ephesians 5:15-17; Psalm 46:10 Series: Not So Fast Recorded: October 11, 2026 Church: New Hope Community Church, Clovis, California A sailboat running with the wind nearly carries itself. Turn it against the wind and the afternoon becomes a fight of tacking, straining, and sore hands. Most of us spend our attention the second way. This message asks two questions of every glowing screen: what am I looking at, and is this the right time to look at it? Jesus calls the eye the lamp of the body, and Scripture treats what we gaze at as something that shapes who we become. Comparison, outrage, and endless ads are built to keep us scrolling, and the message separates necessary availability from habitual checking. Four practices follow: screen-free boundaries, digital fasting and Sabbath rest, keeping the device in its place, and replacing the habit with real presence. A software fix cannot repair a heart, so the message ends at the cross, where Jesus gave us his undivided attention. New Hope Community Church is a Bible teaching church in Clovis, California.
